Norman the 22nd Chief or "The wicked man" as has always been said in my family, certainly did not support Prince Charlie, and to say that under his chiefship the Clan supported Bonnie Prince Charlie in the 45 is just not true. The Macleods supported the Hanoverians and had no great love for the Stuarts. The MacLeods of Raasay did fight for the Prince and along with all the people of that island paid dearly for it. In fact it was the Hanoverian Skye Militia raised by "The Wicked Man" that raped and pillaged Raasay and its people. A shameful episode in the history of the clan, when some MacLeods wrought grievious harm on their fellow clansmen and women. Norman was most certainly a horrible character well deserving of his nickname(The original one)"the red man" being a latter day invention based on his famous portrait.

Very interesting and in depth geneology.
Now that i have become a "family man" i have started to trace back my family line.
Being from the Isle of Lewis i always had the idea that MacLeods were everywhere and that it would be easy to "trace my roots" if ever i needed to.
I now reside in Glasgow and find it difficult to trace my family tree but looking back to Olaf Leod has made me more determined to succeed.
My family of MacLeods originate from Point in the Isle of Lewis.
I was of the impression that "Hold Fast" was all the clan macleods motto but have since found that "I birn quil I se/ Lucio NonUro" - which translates "I burn while I shall burn/I Burn but am not consumed" - is MacLeod of Lewis' motto.

[...] The MacLeod (in Gaelic MacLeoid) clan can be traced back to Leod Olafson who was born around 1200, the youngest son of Olaf the Black one of the last Norse Kings of Mann and the Isles. Leod inherited the regions of Lewis and Harris along with parts of Skye on his father’s death in 1237. Through marriage to the Norse seneschal of Skye, the family acquired Dunvegan Castle, which remains the ancestral family home. The Clan consists of two main branches: the MacLeods of Lewis descend from Leod’s son Torquil while the MacLeods of Harris and Skye descend from another son, Tormod. I have also included a detailed lineage of the clan chiefs. There are quite a few tartans now associated with the clan MacLeod, but by far the most common are those of Lewis and Harris.
